"Shinsha" is the Japanese copper red glaze. In a wood/soda firing at high temperatures the copper is subject to quite dramatic and unexpected changes. The copper from the glaze inside the bowl has become gaseous and in mixing with the alkaline minerals in the ash on the face of this bowl has become a Teal blue with metallic copper lustre in places.
The softly curving rim is smokey white with occasional blue flashes, edged on the inside with a rose coloured blush which fades into the pale green celadon walls. As the glaze pools in the throwing rings towards the Chadamari centre the copper red becomes stronger with a celadon spiral line running through it. The copper has crystallised into a silver lustre around the Chadamari.
The foot ring has strong shell marks, reminiscent of fossil shells, the ribs of the shells resonating with the exceptionally regular rhythm of the chattering. The orange blushed spiral of the turning rings is boldly defined and without affectation, just two and a half turns, but soft and simple like a seashell.
