About me

I am a Potter, which is not so much about what you do, as about who you are.

I live in the country side of Japan, north of Tokyo, in a small rural community, firing a wood kiln and making a living from the art that I love.

I started pottery at the age of 14, and later gained a BA in ceramics design at Latrobe University. I ran Castle Donnington Pottery in Swan Hill for four years, before coming to the traditional pottery town of Mashiko, Japan,in 1990. I apprenticed to the National Living Treasure, Tatsuzo Shimaoka. I lived in the Mashiko area for over twenty years, until we were displaced be the Great East Japan Earthquake and the nuclear disaster that followed. We relocated to Minakami in Gunma prefecture and have finally settled into a traditional Japanese farmhouse, rebuilt the wood kiln with quake resistant improvements and am finally back in business!

I look forward to happily ever aftering here in Japan, making wood fired porcelain functional pottery, spending as much time with my lovely wife and four beautiful children as I can; sharing good food, good conversation and good times.

I exhibit my work mainly in Japan, but have started to venture into the UK, the US and even back home in Oz. I do workshops and write articles for magazines occasionally. I hope that my work brings some of that joy of living into the homes and lives of the people who use it.
