IGUSA HIDASUKI TEABOWL 4

A peaceful bowl, reminiscent of sumie painting with a dark smokey grey face against the pale background of the inner surface. The surface is dappled like a breeze has rippled the surface of a pond.

The flame has softened the bowl in the kiln, causing it to move from a uniform circular shape. Igusa hidasuki markings remind me of twigs and stalks of grass, and fly ash gives slight mossy patches the bowl curves down to a shallow chadamari of subtle throwing rings.

The foot is clearly defined with a firm, orange blushed turning spiral in the centre. The shell marks are dark, with a small indentation left in the foot ring by their removal. The flame colour on the chattering has a lustrous surface.

SHINSHA TEABOWL 1

"Shinsha" is the Japanese copper red glaze. In a wood/soda firing at high temperatures the copper is subject to quite dramatic and unexpected changes. The copper from the glaze inside the bowl has become gaseous and in mixing with the alkaline minerals in the ash on the face of this bowl has become a Teal blue with metallic copper lustre in places.

The softly curving rim is smokey white with occasional blue flashes, edged on the inside with a rose coloured blush which fades into the pale green celadon walls. As the glaze pools in the throwing rings towards the Chadamari centre the copper red becomes stronger with a celadon spiral line running through it. The copper has crystallised into a silver lustre around the Chadamari.

The foot ring has strong shell marks, reminiscent of fossil shells, the ribs of the shells resonating with the exceptionally regular rhythm of the chattering. The orange blushed spiral of the turning rings is boldly defined and without affectation, just two and a half turns, but soft and simple like a seashell.

YOUHEN TEABOWL 5

A dramatic bowl, with strong chiaroscuro between the dark glaze and the natural ash. Bold oranges and a lustrous golden surface quality play against the mossy green of the ash runs. The rim has been carved into a rugged ridge line edged in white with occasional pools of dark glaze.

The tenmoku style glaze has run down the walls of the bowl and combined with the ash to give a hares fur style glaze which breaks brown for three quarters of the chadamari.

Ash has run down and pooled around the foot ring, framing the smooth lustrous surface within. The golden flashing on the chattering has occasional darker motes caused by a heavy reduction cooling.

YOUHEN TEABOWL 4

A deep bowl with a watery quality, the natural ash glazed surface has soft mauve tones beneath a mossy green ash runs. The rim flows like a wave.

Liquid ash has fallen in large drops from the shelf above this bowl washing the hares fur tenmoku glaze deep into the bowl with a heavy roll around the chadamari. The edges around the drops have an oil on water type lustre.

Shell marks have left deep notches in the foot, and the centre has soft turning rings like ripples in a pool.

IGUSA HIDASUKI TEABOWL 3

This is one of my quietest bowls. Unpretentious and simple, its dappled steel grey face is silhouetted against the paler white of the interior, like mountains in the mist. The carbon trapping has given tones that are very similar to "Sumie". Its shape is settled, with a low hip that gives a sense of stability.

The inside is a soft, soapy white with a subtle orange corona around the curve of the hip.

Subtle shell marks on the foot are framed by a chattered hip graduating from smokey grey to orange, surrounding loose spiral centre.

IGUSA HIDASUKI TEABOWL 2

This bowl is warm, bright and lustrous. No glaze was applied to this bowl, nature has glazed and decorated it for me. A wonderful example of flame colour, igusa hidasuki has fallen discreetly on the edge and face of the bowl giving an understated focal point. Ash has detailed the wavy rim in white.

The inside is like a radiant sunset, with a bold throwing ring forming the chadamari.

The foot is turned in concentric rings, framed by a white edge and small shell marks. The chattered hip has a soft texture.

YOUHEN TEABOWL 3

This "TsuTsu" style Chawan has very strong carbon trapping and bold ash runs down the smooth dappled surface to an angled hip. A deceivingly simple shape, the cylindrical form curves subtly into the wave of the rim giving the bowl a dramatic profile.

Ash has accumulated inside this deep bowl driven by the roiling flames, turning the black tenmoku glaze into a "Taihi" style, tortoise shell glaze. The glaze breaks around the edge of the "Chadamari" like the corona around an eclipse.

The foot has clear shell marks and the ash flowing over the chattered hip has a soapy translucency.
The spiral turning inside the foot is bold, only two and a half rotations, which has caused the surface of the clay to tear at the centre, a mark of the process in the finished bowl.

About me

I am a Potter, which is not so much about what you do, as about who you are.

I live in the country side of Japan, north of Tokyo, in a small rural community, firing a wood kiln and making a living from the art that I love.

I started pottery at the age of 14, and later gained a BA in ceramics design at Latrobe University. I ran Castle Donnington Pottery in Swan Hill for four years, before coming to the traditional pottery town of Mashiko, Japan,in 1990. I apprenticed to the National Living Treasure, Tatsuzo Shimaoka.

Since then I have been happily ever aftering here in Japan, making woodfired porcelain functional pottery, spending as much time with my lovely wife and four beautiful children as I can; sharing good food, good conversation and good times.

I exhibit my work mainly in Japan, but have started to venture into the UK, the US and even back home in Oz. I do workshops and write articles for magazines occasionally. I hope that my work brings some of that joy of living into the homes and lives of the people who use it.
